The intent behind the compilation of the book was clearly noted by the author, and he stated, “I did not come across a book (on prayer) that covered the topic comprehensively, so I felt obliged to produce a book that collected together as many features of the Prophet’s prayer (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as possible, from the takbeer (opening of the prayer) to the tasleem (concluding of the prayer)…” He further asserted his preferred methodology employed in the book, by adopting strict principles of adhering to the authentic Sunnah, and the difficult task he was faced in ensuring that. It has thus developed into a study text, and a valuable primer setting a standard in reviving the method of our prayer – and becoming a means in perfecting our servitude towards Allah in the Prophetic manner. It is our hope that this new English rendering will ensure an earnest continuation in helpingMuslims who wish to follow the guidance of their Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) in their daily worship. And that the utilisation of this work becomes a catalyst for those who truly love the Prophet (may Allah bestow His Mercy upon him) in fulfilling his command to, “Pray as you have seen me praying.”
The scholars say, If the pain which afflicts the heart is connected with something from the past the it is sadness. If it is connected with something from the future, then it is anxiety. If it I connected to the current condition of the person then it is grief.
Upon investigation into the path to remedy, for grief, and striving to repel and emove this from ones heart, we find that the people are greatly negligent and turn tto variosus directions which are astray from a real remedy. There is nothing which can heal, give ease, give harmony, there is no medicine or cure except in truly returning to Allah the Majestic and High.
The greatest action of worship which manifests the Khushu, of the body to Allah is the prayer (salah). Allah has praised those who have Khushu, in the prayer. al-Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, said, ‘When you stand in prayer, stand in due obedience as Allah has ordered you, beware of negligence and looking (here and there), beware that Allah be looking at you while you are looking at something else, asking Allah for Paradise and taking refuge with Him from the Fire, yet your heart is heedless, not knowing what the tongue is saying.’ Hudhayfah said, ‘The first thing you will lose of your religion will be Khushu and the last thing you will lose of your religion will be the prayer, and it is well possible that there is no good in a person who prays, and soon will come a time when you shall entre a large Masjid and not see a single person with Khushu. This small treatise deals with the correct and accurate meaning of Khushu, and with three extremely beneficial appendixes.
In this book, al Allamah Muhammad b. Salih al-Uthaymin explains a number of vital issues related to the Prayer in a very simple and comprehensive fashion. Not only does the Shaykh clarify the description of the Prayer, but he also expounds on finer details such as the meaning of the legislated supplications and remembrance articulated in the Prayer, which is highly beneficial to every Muslim, especially the English reader. This treatise provides the reader with accurate information based on the Qur’an and the Sunnah, so that the Muslim can actualize the saying of the Prophet (Sallahu alayhi wassalam): “Pray as you have seen me pray”
